GAS MILEAGE EXPECTATIONS

What kind of miles per gallon figure do people get from their 101s?  Mine’s a 750, running a DLX, on stock gearing and cruising at 40-45 I’m only getting around 20 to the gallon which is a bit inconvenient on runs.  A friend with a ’25 shortframe 600 gets similar.  I’ve tried leaning out the carb but it’s really as lean as I’d want now, and running pretty much spot-on other than at lower speeds with a trailing throttle when it runs rough.  I’ve read that I should expect around 50-60; is this realistic?  Is there something I have missed with my carb setup? What sort of tank range should I be getting with my bike?

Morning Stuart , I get about 55 to 60miles per gallon , English gallon (160 ounces against American gallon at 128 ounces) ! Run 18/36 sprockets and as you , cruise 40 - 45 , plus more at times , depending on circumstances . My 101 - 1928 45inch . Although I am running a an M88 carb on '37 Sports Scout cylinders !! So if anything you should get better mpg than I . A standard 101 should get 50 -60 mpg , not sure what to suggest apart from checking air leaks at the manifold , what condition is the engine in ? if guids are well worn , this wont help . Rough running at low speeds might indicate it's running very rich then but ok at 45 mph ? I get about 60mpg on '29 Super X which runs a DLX so you should get a lot better than 20 ? hope you can sort it OK . Best wishes , Ken

I get 45-50 MPG on ethanol regular on a "correct" 45 CI 101 at 45 MPH.  Yours may be running rich.  Try the adjustment procedure in the riders instruction book for a starting point.  If that doesn't help, then I would look for a float or needle problem

I was getting around the same as Ken with standard gearing on DGP 929, which would sit happilly at 50-55 mph on a long run. George has accurate records of getting 65mpg per US gallon 2 up to Florida in 1945. I use the lowest octane gas available. Using a cap of 2-stroke oil may improve the issue, anyone tried a kerosene mix ? Wartime gas may have been as low as 60-65 octane. Low comp sidevalves are probably pouring unburnt fuel thru the exhaust pipes on modern gas.

OK, thanks, chaps.  It appears I may have (yet another) problem then! I'm confident my carb is well set up, and am confused as to why my machine runs well without any signs of running rich, or oil dilution - if I'm using so much, where could it be going?  I think Ken may be correct, that it's a transient issue at trailing throttle, perhaps when both idle and high speed jets are working. But I think my most sensible first step would be to reconfirm the consumption figures I did.  It's a good excuse for a nice long ride if nothing else!
