Primary Idler gear thrust washers

    Good morning to all!

I am looking at my primary gears today and I have a concern about the Idler gear. This is the gear that takes the power from the engine and puts it to the Clutch basket. These are helical gears so I would assume there would be side pressure.  In the Inner and outer cases there are hardened washers "staked" into the casting. It look a bit weak to me. I am worried about these washers spinning out of the casting with the side thrust on the gear. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Right now I am looking at making combination bushings and washers as one piece and keying these into the cases. Am I worrying too much about this? Or should I stake the washers in and hope for the best?

    Thank you for your thoughts.

The angle of the cogs is so small, just some 12 deg. so they don't develop much side thrust. I have not seen problems with any original thrust washer in the engine other than when there is a fundamental problem with lubrication. Stake method or pin size is not an issue, they can be prick punched in place just as well. The washers should sit firm, if they have an opportunity to move, the vibration will put strain on the pins. Mind you, early Scouts did not even have staked thrust washers...
