I have a copy of page 40M from the R&O manual which is a dimensioned illustration of the comversion which was submitted by Roger Long. Anybody  on the list attempted this conversion. i have a spare hub and would like to give it a shot.

Ive done it on one scout and  used ball races on 2 others, criticalis a accurate spacer between either  type of conversion  .the sealed bearings is economical and very easy (if you have skills and a lathe)  adapters and new outer axles with  the steped shaft as a spacer..I used metric bearings and build as you go approach.Im not a machinest but can use a lathe  and careful in head planning and paper and pen to calculate measurements. I Have viewed the  conversion in the 101 book and it is fine to copy .

Thank you Philip for the reply!  I went ahead and machined the '28 Hub to fit the Timkin tapered roller bearings per the sketch in the R&O manual page I mentioned.  Looks like I will have to make a different hollow axle as the one I have was fitted to a '29 or '30 hub and the areas where the cone bearings sit do not quite line up. Also the threaded end on the sprocket side does not allow enough room for the bearing retaining nut and the locking nut. Will have to make the bearing retaining nut thinner to allow for the locking nut.  Also having a devil of a time trying to figure out the seals.  The R&O manual page mentions cutting away part of the seal to clear the roller retainer.  Not exactly sure what part as it is not all that clear in the diagram and there is not much material to work with.  I'll attach a pdf of the diagram.  Also a picture of my setup to bore the hub..

    Cheers,
