Late 1928 front bearings with brake.

I am servicing my front hub as the bearings were loose.  This is what the assembly should look like for a 1928 bike without Temkin bearings.  The bearings were measuring undersized, so I ordered some new ones from McMasters-Carr.

    Hi Bob,
    Worn or metric ??

Might be missing some dust shields there ?

What have you got for bearing cups and cones ??

Looks like a Walkers hollow axle there.

I am guessing that is a Walker hollow axle also.  I decided not to replace the ball bearing races in the hub as I was not sure if I could get replacements.  I did order some new ball bearings as several of the old ones were out of spec.

The dust shields and felts were in good shape.  The previous owner, who ever that was, did put a thinner felt on the brake side along with inner and outer shields as per the manual recommendation.

Getting the hub apart was a pain and I had to use heat to get off the left lock nut.  I ordered a 3/4”-24 tap and die and that helped the races thread onto the axle fully without binding.

Overall we are in better shape than before with better ball bearings, clean brake pads, and proper ball bearing tension.  Wheel turns freely and does not have any more play it it.

I did replace the springer bushing and pivot rod, but I did not get around to replacing the rocker bushings and rod.  I will do that some time in the future.
