Removing rubber grip from mag twist.

    Hello:

I am going to be restoring my Mag grip on the handlebars to a left hand twist once I get the proper item on Monday.  Does anyone have any advice on how to get the rubber grip off of the twist part without hurting the rubber?  The only thing that I can think of is some heat gun heat to try and soften up and expand the rubber so that it will pull off.

    Thanks,

    Bob

I have found if you pull from the  Point   where it  is open to  Beginning,  it will normally move  Slowly and not always easy .You can also warm gently with a  Hair Dryer of  carefully with a heat gun

Half a chance of getting a Little siliconH style lubricant likeGT80 in there to help, won't damage the rubber. Once a lttle bit of movement, you can try getting a very thin screwdriver or similar in, not to lever off, but to open up slightly to get more lubricant in. Gently does it, easy to take a bite too much and split grip.

Well I got it off with a little heat.  Thank god they did not use gorilla glue to put it on in the first place.  Changed my mag grip from a right twist to a left twist and installed a new slider also.  A little heat to the grip rubber and it slid right back on.

Fixing these little things gets it one step closer to original.

    Peace.

Interesting. I "restored" my 1928 101 to RH shift, RH MAGNETO ADVANCE, LH throttle. All the Indians I have owned came to me as RH shifters with LH throttle (putting the magneto control on the right).

Not only was that what I became used to, I believe it was the original or originally preferred arrangement. Its been the joke that Indian set the throttle on the left (therefore shifter on the right) so right-handed police officers could shoot and so, of course, HD had to do something completely opposite.

I have a 1948 HD Panhead with a LH shifter (RH hand throttle, LH magneto) and  I can not change the shifter - I find it very uncomfortable to control the bike with my RH alone while shifting.
