Upgraded Brake and Wheel Question

First - really appreciatte the information on this site - the forums have proved to be a lifesaver as I have begun to build my 1928 101.  And the manual - it is my new best friend.  So thanks to all who participate - really helps a simple man like me.

I purchased my 1928 101 this past July.  It is a basket - but good bones.  Because it is a basket, I will not be restoring to its original state.  I plan on riding this motorcycle...a lot.  Two questions (with more to come).  Anbody upgrade the rear break to a more modern setup.  Because I will be riding frequently I would like to stop.  My research has turned up short of anything satisfactory.  I did read in article from AMCA that details a 28 short frame with a 71 suzuki drum brake.  I have kicked around going with a 741 rear hub/brake - but just curious if anyone has hadf good results.

Also, I am not going to be using the clincher wheels.  Really interested in motorcycle racing from the past - and really like the look of the early hill climber machines - specifically the Altoona Hill Climbers.  I am going to go with an earlier scout front hub (sans break) but I am wondering if anyone knows what size rims they were running on the hill climbers.  Some of the photos look like 19" - or possibly 18" on front and 19" on rear.

I get my frame and front end back from being straightened shortly and want to make it a roller - just need to finalize my rear break and wheel size.  Really appreciate your help.

    Hello Bradley ,

Good project , I think 19 inch x 400 tyres look good on bobber type bikes although mine has 19 rear and 18 front , may change to 19 front later !? (also looking for Junior Scout tank) .

As for rear brake , you should look for drive and brake on opposite sides as is original , I have seen brake and sprocket on the same side but hooking up to the brake on the right looks wrong and awkward !

The original outer band works well and I've never had any bad experiences with them . 741 brakes are good too especially the rear .

Attach pic of my 101 bobber showing how the wheels look .

good luck , keep us informed of progress . Ken

PS , also attach pic of my 1922 Chief with 19 inch ali rims which look far better than ''English steel rims'' , they look more like the old Kelsey Hayes rims .?

    Hello,

I have a 1928 101 and a 1931 101. The rear band brakes on both work fairly well. But in my opinion the front brake is essential for safe stopping (as is well known front brakes are) and the original style 101 front brakes with carefully fitted new liners seem to stop the bikes very well. I would suspect, though, any rear brake "upgrade" could never replace the stopping ability of a mediocre front brake.

Hello again , interesting 'Indian' in the background ? I thought Royal Enfield badged Indians all had swinging arm rear suspention ? apart from the 150cc Lance . What model have you got ?have you had it running ?

Sorry if being nosy (never learn anything if not)

    I have a 1957 Woodsman , based on 500 Bullet hitched to a Velorex sidecar , makes a good outfit .

Hey Ken...the bike in the background is a 1949 Indian Scout - all Indian - but with the vertical style motors...Recently got the transmission finished and I am in the process of putting back together - when I am not chasing my 6 and 8 year-old-boys around.  I also have a 49 Arrow - hard tail - single vertical.
